Weekly Miscellany: Vol. 4

~the job~

first week of classes. i have the syllabi done and class blogs set up. but, this was not really a "full" week of teaching. yesterday, i attended a full-day "retreat" with my new colleagues: a chance for me to get acquainted with the challenges of the job. i am learning a lot from these new interactions -- about the institution, about what it means to be a scholar and teacher during this moment of history, and most importantly, where do i fit in.

~the academic article~

waiting to be read and commented upon by my reader! meanwhile, i am beginning to work on academic article no. 2. reading up on it.

~ writing~
other than on monday, wednesday, friday, when i teach, and usually use up my morning time to prepare for the classes, i have used my tuesdays and thursdays to generate new work. and that's what i would like to do during the entire semester. the weekends, i want to keep for revising and rethinking the work i have generated during those two days. it's going to be a challenge to write on the days i teach, especially since i also have an academic book to write. but, my mantra is: 15 mins. a day. if you love something, you can spare at least 15 mins for it.

i have to admit, the stuff i wrote during this past week were not that good. they read more like rehearsals for something that's yet to come than complete drafts in themselves. but, i am trying to hang in there. i am producing things so that they can be used later on. keeping my writerly muscles busy. and, i know that is important.
