Weekly Miscellany: Vol. 1

~ moving in, settling down

The kitchen is almost fully organized. When I lived in Austin, I would normally throw in the spices into whatever I was cooking right from the packets they came in. And being not the most organized person in the world, I would often lose track of things. Consequently, I would have three opened packs of garam masala, two opened packs of jeera powder and such. This time around, I am trying to do it differently. So, I bought around 20 mason jars from IKEA, and storing the spices in them, rather than in the plastic packs they come in:

And then, I am writing down the names with a black permanent marker on the outside. I am basically riffing off an age-old practice of Indian women. Growing up, I have rarely seen the women I knew --- my grandmother, my mother, my aunts --- throw out any containers. The old icecream jars were recycled to freeze ginger and onion and garlic paste, jelly and pickle bottles were made into spice containers. And that's exactly what I am trying to do in this new home.

So far, my finds are:
two South Asian grocery stores
one Chinese restaurants
three new coffee-shops

~ paperwork

My H1B approval came in this week! Which means, I can now begin to do the next round of paperwork to finalize my appointment. No, it never ends. But, at least, there has been some progress.

~ the academic article

Again, some progress has been made! I have done all the edits, and now all I need to do is write a thesis paragraph in the beginning, and footnotes throughout, before I send it in for some feedback to my colleagues.

~ in my notebook

i finally finished the mahi sequence: five poems. i am still not sure what to do with them. Do I send them out now? Do I wait for this series to assume a more definite shape in my head? I am not sure yet. But, for now, i am happy that i finished re-ordering what i wrote for the persona poetry class, and had been able to re-fashion them into stronger poems.
